The Frist Week of Grade 10 Students
2014-1-23

What an exciting week for the new grade 10 students! This is the first week for new grade 10 students to taste Canadian education. In the past 9 years, all they have learnt is from traditional Chinese system, therefore, it is really a big challenge for their to adapt quickly to the new Canadian learning environment. Lots of grade 10 student have get prepared.

Even though I understand and have prepared for the difficulties ahead of me, I still need time to adjust to the new academic life including a completely different speaking environment. It’s English! I have studied English for 9 years, but I am not accustomed to being able to orally communicate effectively when speaking to a Canadian teacher in English. Academic words, oral communication, listening skills and vocabulary lists, we have a lot of work that is related to English. I want to take a break, but there is so much that is unknown to me. Now, staying up at night has become a book worm.

During the first week, the Canadian teachers allowed us to understand by speaking slower than they would do so normally. However, our lack in vocabulary made us feel tired and exhausted. Now though, when I look back, I feel that I'm growing up in this environment every day.
