Qing Ming Festival &Easter
2021-04-02

On Friday April 2 the Student Council planned a surprise visit to all classes in celebration of the weekend festivals of Qing Ming Festival here in China and Easter Weekend in Canada. We are an International Program who blend Canadian study and traditions with our Chinese staff and students here in China. On this very special weekend the two countries are both sharing time with family, enjoying delicious foods and traditions of our countries. The Student Council wanted to share the joy of both celebrations with everyone in the Program. As we study, learn and spend our days together it is rare that our two nations would celebrate a holiday at the same time. Although the two festivals are very different, recognizing this unusual and rare situation of having them share the same date seemed a point in time that should be recognized and shared together.

The newly elected members of Student Council were very clear in their decision of how this could be done. They worked together to create a unique way to reach everyone and extend their wishes for a special festival weekend for all!

As we are approaching Mid Term Exams it was decided that a quick visit to each class to bring a treat and share a brief description of Easter in Canada was in order. In true Canadian Easter tradition it is believed by young children that the Easter Bunny will bring a treat to every child on Easter Sunday morning. This tradition was recreated here at the Program. The members of the Student Council put on bunny ears and surprised  each class with a chocolate bar and happy wishes. Mr. Myles assisted and offered each teacher and head teacher a choice of treat as well. It was truly a surprise and brought laughter from the students and staff.

Although both festivals carry a deeper traditional meaning for each country, Student Council focused on the spirit of togetherness and sharing of the many ways in which we as people of this global world are the same. Love of family, respect for the traditions of each of our nations and our desire to join together in celebration and understanding.

Special thanks to our 2021 Student Council, well done!
